Are Global South countries ready to renovate global peace policies and narrative?

In 2019, Cecilia Milesi was invited to publish insights on South-South cooperation on peace and development, and emerging trends in international cooperation in a multipolar world.

The Asia Global Online Journal and the United Nations Systems Staff College (UNSSC) published two original articles highlighting Cecilia’s evolving reflections on the value of South-South solidarity to enhance peace, security and development in conflict-affected countries. The pieces look specifically at current international cooperation developments after the historic Second High-level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation (BAPA+40). The conference brought together representatives from 160 countries to agree the future South-South cooperation framework.

Below, a summary of both publications with a direct link to the Spanish version, translated and published by Open Democracy | Democracia Abierta.

  1. For a Truly Global Peace Agenda in a Multipolar World

Asia Global Online LogoChina and the Asian region, more broadly, are taking pivotal roles in leveling the playing field for developing nations when it comes to driving global policies and multilateralism. Cecilia Milesi, a 2019 AsiaGlobal Fellow of the Asia Global Institute at the University of Hong Kong, and Lauren Hess from Georgetown University argue that the wider sharing and adoption of best practices to prevent and address conflicts significantly broadens the pursuit of world peace.

2. The role of South-South Cooperation in realizing the vision of peace and development for all

UNSSC-logoThe preamble of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by all United Nations Member States solemnly declared: “There can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development.” It is positive that countries are paying increased attention to the interlinkage between peace and security and development. It is essential to multiply and diversify the efforts to enhance inclusive peace and development, moving from statements to action. South-South Cooperation offers an additional and complementary path to renew, revitalize, and multiply the alternatives to sustain inclusive development and peace. Importantly, this is done with Global South countries directly affected by insecurity, instability, and violence at the forefront of policy and programming processes. South-South Cooperation is a prospect to increase knowledge transfer and enhance policy coordination in a multipolar world.
